Officials from Togo and the United States recently convened to deepen their collaboration on vital issues surrounding local governance, decentralization, and fostering social cohesion. The pivotal discussions took place between Togo’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Local Governance, and Customary Affairs and Kimberly M. McClure, the Chargée d’affaires at the United States Embassy in Togo.
Ms. McClure visited Lomé on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, for a courtesy call, during which she engaged with the Minister on a range of subjects reflecting shared priorities between the two nations concerning territorial governance and local development initiatives.
Key points of their exchange included the significant progress made in Togo’s decentralization process, strategies for enhancing the capabilities of local territorial entities, and various mechanisms designed to strengthen social cohesion. These mechanisms specifically emphasize the active involvement of local authorities, traditional chieftaincies, and community stakeholders.
During the meeting, the Minister provided a comprehensive overview of Togo’s administrative structure and detailed the governmental reforms currently underway. These reforms aim to boost the efficiency of public action at the local level and bring state services closer to the citizens.

For her part, Ms. Kimberly M. McClure reiterated the United States Embassy’s keen interest in the ongoing local governance dynamics within Togo. She underscored her nation’s commitment to gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with decentralization, thereby enabling more effective support for initiatives in this critical sector.
Beyond institutional matters, the dialogue also encompassed the pressing security challenges confronting the sub-region. Both parties emphasized the imperative of continuing joint efforts to promote stability, peace, and sustainable development across the area.
This productive meeting serves as a testament to the robust cooperative relations between Togo and the United States. It further highlights their shared dedication to backing reforms that foster effective local governance and inclusive development, ultimately benefiting the Togolese population.
