During an official visit to Rabat, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu underscored the urgency of elevating the long-standing ties between France and Morocco. The two nations are poised to sign approximately fifteen agreements aimed at reinforcing their already robust cooperation, a process initiated in 2024.
Transforming Bilateral Relations into a New Era
In his opening remarks at the 15th High-Level Meeting between France and Morocco, Prime Minister Lecornu described the occasion as a pivotal moment for the relationship. He emphasized the need to scale up cooperation, particularly in security, counterterrorism efforts, and joint initiatives across Africa. Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of fast-tracking commitments made under the enhanced 2024 partnership agreement.
A Suite of Agreements Across Key Sectors
The governments of both nations are finalizing nearly fifteen accords spanning economic, security, migration, cultural, and defense domains. Among the highlights are plans for a new Rabat regional express rail line, enhanced defense industry collaborations, and expanded cultural exchanges. The visit may also lay the groundwork for a landmark state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, potentially culminating in the signing of an unprecedented friendship treaty proposed by Lecornu.
Strengthening Ties Despite Controversies
The visit follows a period of renewed diplomatic harmony between Paris and Rabat, marked by France’s 2024 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. However, the trip is overshadowed by fresh allegations from a media consortium regarding Morocco’s alleged use of the Pegasus spyware. While neither the French government nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has addressed these claims, both entities remain committed to deepening the partnership with Morocco.
