Legal action opened over sonko’s touba remarks

Legal proceedings have been initiated following controversial statements attributed to Ousmane Sonko regarding the holy city of Touba. A complaint was formally filed with the Prosecutor of the Republic at the High Court of Dakar, urging an immediate judicial inquiry into the matter.

The petition, submitted on 14 July 2026 by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang—a Senegalese citizen, entrepreneur, and descendant of the city’s founding figure—contends that Sonko’s remarks inflict serious reputational harm upon Touba and its residents. The plaintiff argues that the allegations, which include claims of illicit funds entering the sacred city, contradict its deeply rooted values of integrity, justice, and devotion as established by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.

In the formal complaint, the Collective of the Grandchildren of Serigne Touba requests that the Prosecutor compel Ousmane Sonko to clarify his statements and provide supporting evidence. The filing further seeks a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of the accusations, with the potential for legal action if defamation, false information dissemination, or other applicable offenses under Senegalese law are substantiated.

The complainant asserts possession of substantial evidence, including video recordings, transcripts of the incriminating remarks, and media publications documenting the statements. This legal move arrives amid escalating political tensions surrounding Sonko’s recent public declarations and may lead to further judicial scrutiny if the public prosecutor proceeds with the request.
