Niger and Turkey strengthen strategic ties during high-level visit to ankara

The partnership between Niger and Turkey has reached a new milestone with a high-profile visit to Ankara by Nigerien President General Abdourahamane Tiani. This official trip marked his first overseas visit since assuming office and culminated in the signing of multiple agreements spanning security, economic development, healthcare, education, and diplomatic cooperation.

Following their discussions at the presidential palace, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Tiani formalized several cooperation frameworks. These include a higher education protocol for 2026-2030, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), an agreement regarding the management of the Niger-Turkey Friendship Hospital, and a memorandum on diplomatic collaboration.

President Erdogan emphasized the shared ambition to expand bilateral ties across vital sectors such as defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. He also announced the creation of a dedicated mechanism to foster business opportunities between Ankara and Niamey.

Reaffirming Turkey’s commitment to African nations facing security challenges—particularly in the Sahel—Erdogan highlighted plans to deepen military training cooperation and intelligence-sharing initiatives. He underscored that Ankara’s African policy is built on mutual respect, equitable partnerships, and mutual benefits.

The Turkish leader also celebrated several ongoing projects in Niger, including the Niger-Turkey Friendship Hospital, irrigation and rural development initiatives, and educational programs led by the Maarif Foundation. He noted that nearly 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing higher education in Turkey.

President Tiani echoed these sentiments, describing the relationship as strategically vital for Niger. He reflected on the rapid growth of bilateral ties since Erdogan’s landmark visit to Niger in 2013. Tiani also praised Ankara’s support in combating armed groups in the Sahel, crediting this cooperation with enhancing Niger’s security capabilities and regional stability.
